Non-Status Women to Mayor: "Coderre, where's your Sanctuary City?!"

What: Rally and Creative Action at Montreal City Hall
When: Thursday, 19 October 2017 at 11:45AM
Where: 275 Notre Dame East, Montreal (Champ-de-Mars metro)

Nine months after Denis Coderre's announcement that he would make Montreal into a Sanctuary City, and in the context of an elections campaign, the Non-Status Women's Collective will rally at City Hall to do a creative action denouncing the inaction of the Mayor and demanding dignity and security.

Montreal was declared a "Sanctuary City" in February 2017. In reality there have been very few concrete actions to make it so. Non-status people in Montreal still do not have access to declared work, education, health-care, housing, and protection against sexual violence.

Moreover, the SPVM – the city police, who report directly to Coderre – continue to collaborate with border services. In 2016, the SPVM made 2872 calls to the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA). In 83% of the cases, these calls were to verify immigration status. This practice continues to this day.

The first step to making Montreal a Sanctuary City is to stop the SPVM profiling and turning people over to the CBSA.

The Non-Status Women's Collective of Montreal formed in October 2015, on the initiative of undocumented women from diverse backgrounds who wanted to unite, support each other, and wage a struggle together. On October 19th, the Collective is demanding a real Sanctuary City, with no collaboration between the SPVM and the CBSA.
