Montreal, June 8, 2017- Montrealers will gather this Thursday to express their solidarity with Bissan and her baby daughter Sarah, who remain stranded in Gaza. The rally will take place just outside of Concordia University, the place of Bissan’s graduate studies.

For over 5 months, Bissan Eid – a 24 year old Concordia student and new mother – has prevented from leaving Gaza due to the unreasonably slow processing of her exit visa and due to Israeli and Jordanian authorities’ refusal to process her exit using her Canadian passport. As such, she was forced to give birth to her daughter, Sarah, in Gaza- far away from her immediate family and from adequate medical facilities. She has also been forced to miss a semester of school, which has delayed the completion of her Master's degree in Civil Engineering.

Despite repeated requests for support, the Canadian government has refused to intervene directly and has instead redirected Bissan to apply for exit documents through the Jordanian authorities. Supporters will be calling on the Canadian government to take action and follow through on their responsibilities to support two Canadians trapped overseas. Specifically, they will be demanding that the government expedite the processing of Sarah's citizenship papers and directly coordinate with Israeli and Jordanian authorities to ensure Bissan and Sarah’s immediate return home.

Confirmed Participants:

  • Ishani Ghosh, Administrative Coordinator- Centre for Gender Advocacy
