Press Conference calls attention to problems with the Temporary Foreign Worker Program in Canada
When: Sunday, July 23th at 14:00 pm
Where: Main entrance of the Oratoire Saint-Joseph, 3800, Queen Mary Road (metro Côte-des-Neiges), Montréal (Québec).
Who: Viviana Medina, organizer with the Immigrant Worker Centre of Montreal, Noé Arteaga, ex-temporary foreign worker and member of the Immigrant Workers Centre of Montreal, and some Guatemalan workers who were defrauded and arrested in Victoriaville.
The Temporary Foreign Workers Programs have been questioned for a long time because of the systematic infringement of human and labour rights that migrant workers suffer. This situation takes place due to the combination of factors derived from their migrant status, and labour de-regulation. This problem tends to increase the labour precariousness of migrant workers, and also affects Canadian citizens.
Earlier this year, two temporary foreign workers died. Guatemalan Cesar Ariel Garcia died on February 22 when a building crashed in the Pittet farm in Saint Tite. Benjamin Hernandez Escareño, from Mexico, died June 13 in a tractor accident in Saint Clothilde while working at the Lefort farm.
