From September 27th 2016, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) is holding a huge triennial (once every three years) conference in Montreal, inviting the aviation industry and government representatives from across the world. According to the Suzuki Foundation, if ICAO's 191 member nations fail to reach a strong aviation agreement in Montreal, it could undermine the world's ability to meet the Paris Agreement's climate goals.
If the aviation industry were a nation, it would be the 7th biggest producer of green house gases. And yet it goes virtually unchecked: its emissions are excluded from all international climate treaties even though it is predicted to triple in size by 2050. Those privileged enough to fly represent only 2-5% of the world population, although the climate change that this industry's emissions cause will wreak havoc on the planet.
