Parc-Extension Residents to Rally Against Luxury Apartment Project for Plaza Hutchison
What: Rally against Ron Basal's project for Plaza Hutchison
When: Thursday January 11, 2017 at 6pm
Where: 405 Ogilvy Street
Parc-Extension residents will gather tomorrow in front of the borough office to oppose the construction of luxury apartments at Plaza Hutchison. At the same time, the Urban Consultation Committee of the Villeray-St-Michel-Parc-
Extension borough will be meeting to discuss landlord Ron Basal's request for permits to move forward with the project.
In recent months, the Plaza Hutchison building- which has housed community organizations, cultural associations, religious spaces, language schools and small local buisinesses- has been practically emptied by the landlord, who has been evicting all the tenants and has refused to provide basic maintenance and services to those who remain. Ron Basal has also refused to respect the leases of the remaining tenants, has threatened and intimidated them on several occasions, and has attempted to start renovations without permits.
Residents hope to send a clear message to the committee and to the borough council that they are opposed to this project and that they intend to fight gentrification in Parc-Extension.
